Historic Opening of Mount Gambier’s First Hindu Temple

Mount Gambier has marked a historic milestone with the opening of its first Hindu temple, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, creating a new place of worship, culture, learning and community connection in the heart of the Limestone Coast. Guided by the blessings of His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, the spiritual leader of BAPS, the mandir has been established as a place that promotes peace, service, family values and harmony. BAPS is an international Hindu organisation known for its spiritual, cultural, humanitarian and community service activities. While rooted in the Hindu faith, the mandir is open to everyone. People of all faiths, cultures and backgrounds are welcome to visit, learn, reflect and experience the mandir and its traditions. The opening celebrations were held over the weekend of 3 and 4 October and featured a series of cultural, spiritual and community events. The festivities began with a colourful Nagar Yatra, or community procession, through Mount Gambier, featuring traditional music, dance and beautifully decorated sacred images. The procession brought together devotees, local residents, families and well-wishers in a celebration that welcomed the wider community to share in the occasion.

This was followed by an evening of cultural performances and devotional music, highlighting themes of harmony, family, service and community connection. The main ceremony, known as the Murti Pratishtha Vidhi, was held on Sunday. The traditional Vedic ceremony formally consecrated the sacred images within the mandir, marking its opening as a place of worship and reflection. A community gathering followed, celebrating the significance of the occasion and the role the mandir hopes to play in strengthening families, preserving culture and contributing positively to the wider Mount Gambier community.

With its opening, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Mount Gambier will provide regular spiritual gatherings, youth activities, children’s value-based programs and community initiatives promoting service, harmony and wellbeing. Beyond serving the local Hindu community, the mandir aims to be a welcoming place for the wider Limestone Coast community — a place where people can visit, learn about Hindu traditions and culture, and build connections across different faiths and backgrounds. The opening represents a new chapter for the Hindu community in the Limestone Coast and reflects the region’s growing cultural diversity. The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, located at 7 Ralston Road, Mount Gambier, is open to visitors: Sunday–Friday: 6:30pm–8:00pm Saturday: 5:00pm–7:00pm Visitors of all faiths and backgrounds are welcome.
